Sally Coates

Consultant: Sally Coates

Sally Hamlin Coates is currently a partner at the family-owned Crystal Bay Solutions, LLC. In that role she does consulting with nonprofit organizations focused on board and team alignment as well as rapid development of workflow software.

Most recently Sally served as the Executive Director of the San Francisco affiliate of Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (SFCASA) a non profit agency that recruits, screens and trains volunteers to mentor and advocate for children in the foster care system. Sally has also served as Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, San Francisco affiliate from 1997-2002 where she was the first paid staff and moved the organization from being volunteer run to professional staff managed. Following Komen, Sally served as Executive Director of Episcopal Charities for the Diocese of California where she transitioned the organization from a federated appeal to a hybrid community foundation operating model, which included a restructuring of the board of directors.

Sally began her volunteer work as a youth on Long Island working with the developmentally disabled on Saturday mornings. She continued her community involvement volunteering with a variety of agencies and serving on the boards of the Junior League of San Francisco (President 1995-96), KIDSWay, Self Help for Children, Youth in Arts, Guide Dogs for the Blind (Chair 2002-04), the National Society of Colonial Dames, Episcopal Community Services in America (Board chair 2007-2010) and the San Francisco Symphony League. Her service has given her experience on boards of agencies that varied in size from a $500,000 budget to a $27 million dollar budget.

Sally currently serves on the board of the Episcopal Senior Communities Foundation, is a member of Friends of Child Advocates of Placer County, and is starting a new venture to mentor emerging nonprofit agencies in collaboration with the Placer Community Foundation.

She is married to Cullen Coates and has two children, Elizabeth age 36 and Alex age 33.
